The week before the US Nationals '03, Alissa Johnson had a nasty
fall on the K90, leaving her unconscious with a concussion and
missing most the skin on her face. For Alissa, this was an eye
opener for the competitive weeks ahead. One week later, Alissa
Johnson tied Lindsey Van for 2nd place on the K90 meter jump.
An even bigger achievement at this event for Alissa was on the
large hill in the boys class, where she made the top 30 cut, jumping
in the next round.
Immediately following the US Nationals, five US girls competed
at the Ladies Grand Prix in Austria and Germany. This was Alissa's
first time attending this event. In Saafelden Austria, Alissa
and her teammates took first place in the team event. It was a
very special moment for Alissa to be part of an all girls team.
"No one was upset with the way they jumped. It was the first
time that I actually felt like I was a part of a team, and it
was even better because we were all girls."
At
the end of the summer season in 2003, Alissa had yet another nasty
fall. This time her recovery was not as quick. She had
to have knee surgery and missed over 5 months of training, but
she's back in the track and jumping like a champ.
In previous years, Alissa was very involved with swimming. Before
the age of 15, she won over nine Junior Olympic medals. Alissa
has one brother, Anders Johnson, who is also ski jumper.
Aside from ski jumping, Alissa goes to school full time and takes
summer courses to stay caught up with the rest of her classmates.
She currently has a part time job at a play theater in Park City,
Utah.
As
for future goals... having as much fun as possible with jumping
and hopefully competing in the 2010 Olympics. With an interest
in Science, Sports Physiology and Physical Therapy, Alissa aspires
to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. |
