When Janne Rand was 15, she was watching some of her dad's old
ski flying videos. Her dad, Jay Rand, was a 1968 Olympic ski jumper.
Janne was so inspired that she decided to switch from being an
alpine ski racer to ski jumping.
Two years ago, Janne broke the woman's hill record in Andover,
but it wasn't until she came out of retirement this summer, after
one and a half years of being dormant, that she really felt a
sense of accomplishment. She achieved something she never thought
she could -- jumping down to the 75-80m mark consistently. She
surprised herself and has been jumping better than ever.
Breaking the Women's' Andover hill record was one of Janne's great
accomplishments, but the first time she jumped 75 meters was truly
her best moment. "It completely took me by surprise, but
felt great."
This winter after putting her skis up for all that time, Janne
became involved in ballet. She likes to weight lift with her dad,
run on the treadmill and participate in yoga.
Janne's twin sister, Denja (18), and Ingrid (26), who is now a
X-country skier, were both alpine ski racers.
Janne spent her summer working as a gondola operator at Whiteface
Mountain. She is currently a sophomore at UVM and is majoring
in Molecular Genetics. She obtained a 3.8 GPA, which she hopes
to maintain this coming year. After Janne obtains her B.S. degree
from UVM in Molecular Genetics, she wants to move on to med school
and focus on a career in pediatric surgery, biochemistry, and/or
naturopathic medicine. She also hopes to make the Olympics in
2010 and then move to Miami to pursue a career and get married. |
